FINAL POST

So here it is, the final post:

What did you think of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? I know, a little anti-climactic here after all the discussions that we've had, but personally, I'm done with thinking. :)

  1. Anyone else feel like we're back where we started...well kind of...not reallyish? So we end the book with Huck saying that they're going to try and civilize him, again, and that he's sick of that, can't say I disagree at this point, we've seen what civilization does to all the mindless drones of adults that are just corrupted by societies views and can't think for themselves. Even Tom, he's so stuck in the ideals of his adventure books that he doesn't care that he's torturing Jim, he just wants to do it 'right'. So yeah, pretty much everyone in the book are idiots.

So overall, the book was...well okay. I don't think that it was hard in terms of the actual structure or reading or anything, it was just a little annoying. It really does seem like everyone was just a major idiot except Jim and on occasion Huck. I guess it was just frustrating to see everyone being so stupid and/or immoral. I feel like racism was a big theme, probably the easiest one, but I also think that happiness and independent thought were themes that were addressed. Overall, the only thing that really really annoyed me was the idea that no one else (other than Huck) really seemed to change. Tom was idealistic to begin with, Jim was the most adult figure ever in the book and by-and-by Tom still wanted to go by the book (literally) and by-and-by Jim was still the most mature out of all the people in the book, and by-and-by, and by-and-by, and by-and-by, and by-and-by...if I ever read those words again, I swear that I will kill someone. But otherwise not the worst book that I've ever read.

  2. All I can say is, thank God this book is over. Personally, I strongly, strongly disliked it. I don't know what it was about the book, but I just didn't like it. It was dull and the way he wrote them speaking bothered me so much. Maybe its just that I'm OCD and can't stand it when things aren't in proper English, or even attempting to be correct. That's probably the only concern for me. Okay, maybe the plot bothered me a lot too. I don't know why; I loved all the other books we read this year, just not this one.

By the end of the book, it did seem kind of like deja vu. I mean, he was really right where he started, except his father was out of the way and he was back to being rich again. I do agree with the whole 'everyone is an idiot' thing, but almost not as much now. Tom does seem brighter than the rest, even though it does seem like he's trying to show off his brains by constantly mentioning the books he's read. Huck really would be just like Tom, if he didn't have his morals. Tom just lives for the adventure of things and while he isn't a bad guy, like the duke and king, he isn't a good guy either. By the end of the book, though, I really do like Jim more. He's really a good person, although a little naive and very hopeful. He doesn't deserve all the stuff he had to deal with and he wasn't bitter at all about what happened.

Although it wasn't my favorite book, I understand why we should have read it. The only thing is, is that this is probably the only school book with a semi happy ending. Though, not really.
